Three
Successful Years |
By
Mary Young
Green Hill Center for North Carolina art engaged in a partnership
at Hemphill Library in 2005 that has had a profound impact on
both organizations.Through a prestigious three-year leadership
grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Service, Green
Hill was able to establish an ArtQuest Studio within the new
Hemphill branch. The library's gallery became a satellite space
to feature North Carolina art on a continual basis and special
art residencies brought memorable artists to the library such
as Jim Gallucci, Bryant Holsenbeck, Senora Lynch, Juan Logan,
Virginia Wright-Frierson, and more. The grant allowed us to
bring other special programming |
|
featuring musicians, dancers, and storytellers as well. But
most importantly, the partner-ship enabled both staffs to
learn from each other as we both worked toward a common goal.Out
of the five goals of this part-nership, one key area was to
measure the affect that the arts have on reading and School
readiness in children immersed in the early childhood programs
at the library. All three programs for the library’s
youngest patrons (Storytime, Family Place and Red, Yellow,
Blue) feature blended art and literacy activities. Other goals
included bringing the neighborhood together through the arts
in order to share the culture and heritage that makes this
community so rich.

Additionally,
we wanted teens to gain a better understanding of art while
engaging in evening art workshops and getting involved with
the volunteer program. We can say now that we feel the project
has been immensely successful. Watch for the results of the
study to be published at the end of the grant period.
We have appreciated the opportunity to have so fully become
part of the Hemphill community.

E Egan
Dodsworth loved
to do nothing. Of course, some |
 |
| things
had to be done but he did as little as possible.
Then he discovered a refrigerator in the junkyard,
with a note that says “Make pictures"
and art supplies inside. Dodsworth's life changed
drastically, for the better. This appealing picture
book is great for preschoolers and will be thought-provokong
for older readers as well. |

Teen Summer
Reading Program |
The
Hemphill Branch Library just concluded
its annual Teen Summer Reading Program for young adults
in our community. This summer 68 middle and high school
age teen sparticipated by reading and reviewing books,
magazines and graphic novels. Reading throughout the
summer benefits students because it helps them retain
skills learned during the academic year. Thanks to
generous donations from area businesses, the Hemphill
Library was able to offer unique, teen-friendly incentive
prizes to young adults who read books, attended programs,
volunteered, and participated in Hemphill events.
Please support the organizations and businesses that
donated to our 2007 Teen Summer Reading Program. |
